Huckleberry Hill
Thinning Nov 2018
|
Here we thin an 80
year old mixed stand on the east
side of huckleberry hill and prep for the flatcar bridge installation in
July 2019
|

Log landing just inside the stand of 80 yr old mixed
cedar fir and hemlock
|

This is a 30%-40% thin of an 80 yr old mixed stand |

Cut logs all lay the same way for the processor to
easily work through them

roads

Original 1901 parallel road along creek was utilized |

Hart Logging's skidder outlined by a November sunrise.
That thing could drive just about anywhere and not get stuck
Note the chains and articulated 4 wheel drive
|

We discovered a stand of dead trees at the
top of the hill.
The last two dry summers really took a toll on cedars.
This hill is
mostly solid rock covered by a thin layer of soil
|

It rained and turned everything to mud for
a few days |

Skidder with Jason is churning its way with a load of logs to
the landing to be
sorted.
They were already cut to the right length by the processor
|

Processor just cut a cedar log to 35 ft

Hemlock
Note the defect in the bottom of the one log
We saw that this mature hillside stand was due for harvest

Cedar

Long shot of the shovel sorting the logs into piles
by grade and species. Note the ten yr old stand of Red Cedar in the left
and right foreground |

Sorting more logs
Basically three guys using hi-tech and low-tech equipment logged 15
acres in four weeks. It was amazing to see the efficiency in the way they operated
|

Loading the first log truck
|

Log truck had built in scales
Driver talked to Tim on CB as he neared the limit of
80,000Lbs |

Trucks backed in to the very edge of the forest and
were loaded.

Just couldn't stop taking pictures of loaded trucks
driving out

Tim and Fred the Log truck driver discussing the loading and trucking
|

Here's a good one
Front half of the truck is pulp and the back half Cedar. Truck was going
to smith island where the two mills are located. |
